A fatal accident struck Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district when a bus carrying 18 passengers veered out of control and plunged into the raging Alaknanda River near Gholthir on the Badrinath National Highway. The incident, reported by Police Headquarters spokesperson IG has left the region in shock. Rescue operations are underway, but with more than 11 passengers still missing, fears of a high death toll are mounting.

Details of the Incident

The bus, reportedly a tempo traveler, was traveling toward Rudraprayag when it lost control, possibly due to a sharp turn or slippery road conditions caused by recent heavy rainfall. The vehicle plummeted into the Alaknanda’s turbulent waters, submerging completely. Early reports indicate one confirmed death and seven injuries, with the injured rushed to nearby hospitals, including AIIMS Rishikesh. The exact cause remains under investigation, but the treacherous terrain and weather are suspected contributors. Videos circulating online show the river’s ferocious currents, underscoring the challenges faced by rescue teams.

Rescue Efforts in Full Swing

Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams battling the river’s strong flow to locate missing passengers. Some survivors were evacuated and hospitalized, but the submerged vehicle complicates efforts to find others. The district administration has deployed additional resources, including divers and equipment, while Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is closely monitoring the situation, ensuring support for the affected.
